The Cotton Gin: The Invention That Saved Minutes

Objective: Explain what the Cotton Gin was and how it affected the way people worked.

Answer to Objective:The Cotton Gin was a industrial machine that was invented by Eli Whitney. It was a machine that picked out all of the cotton seeds out of the cotton, which made work very easy for the cotton pickers. The Cotton Gin worked like this " the cotton engine consisted of spiked teeth mounted on a boxed revolving cylinder which, when turned by crank, pulled the cotton fiber through small slotted openings so as to separate the seeds from the lint - - a rotating brush, operated via a belt and pulleys, removed the fibrous lint from the projecting spikes" (Inventors.about 1). The demand of cotton increased and the cotton owners were able to produce the cotton at a fast pace and get the job done. Before the Cotton Gin was invented there were approximately 698,000 enslaved African Americans. and by 1860 nearly 4 million were enslaved. Due to the invention of the Cotton Gin the number of enslaved African Americans decreased.
